Is there any technical reason that you use a 400V transformer to feed the driver tube? The plate voltage on 6E5P is only +200V. Therefore from my point of view, a 220-240V transformer would be enough.
Ostblock, you need t...

Had a small amount of free time tonight. 150vac secondary, fred, 100uf, 500r, 1000uf, 30k, 5k, (like melq schema 4.4) no load voltage(b and c test point with no gas tube) 226.2vdc both lines. secondary is actually putting out 171.6 so 226.2 makes s...

Okay, I think I understand.... and thanks for the link on the YO-186... if I can ever locate some of these I'll be sure to grab some (hmmm, a trip to Russia perhaps). As tubes get very hot internally, there were some procedures for trying to eliminat...

Each new idea is an opportunity or a pain to be involved into a new round of custom work. With all my considerations regarding engaging the DHT I more and more biased to have YO186 as the leading candidate, in fact I almost decided to do it. Fr...

It is only if you chose to employ tube rectification. Many people claim that tube rectification affects sound greatly in this or that way and they are right, it does. However, it does only because the circuit is designed to be affected by recti...

Romy, it sucks, but the different good DHT output tubes seem to want trimming to deliver their best. IMO, the ideal thing would be a quiet way to do this for both channels, not just to match channels but to get the best sound from the particular tub...
Would YO 186 be appropriate to use in "fundamental" chanel? Over narrower band width, to color, "spice," "flavor" more?
It would depend how the Fundamentals Channel is used. The YO186 has phenomenal lower MF, n...

I am looking into building a 45 tube SET amp and I keep reading about how important a good output transformer is. I read that cheaper output transformers like Hammond can be okay for mids and highs, but it will also reduce bass performance. If on...
My few period DHT tube all have this springy sound but they also has a long decay of rattling. It is like string attached under the bottom of the drum and when the drum sound dies away them strings continues to vibrate. I ...

Here is a very good article about the development tube types in the 1920 and the birth of my Telefunken RE-604

Then, here is very cool later but still old advertising from Telefu...

Are any who made high-gain phonostages dealt with vibration damping tube sockets? Since I’m thinking not about my next generation of 85dB gain two-stages phonocorrector:

I wonder ...

I do not know how interesting it is from technological or sonic perspective but the enthusiasm and perseverance of this guy defiantly deserves applauds. Claude Perrier in his 70 makes home direct heated triodes, how many people like him are out ...

My mind turned back recently to the subject of tube tuners – there were some even that made it happen. I have to admit that I have general difficulties with tube tuners. My past experience with then was not so great.
When we are talking abou...

Dear Cat, I own tube and SS tuners, and the ones I own now follow a list of other tuners I have owned over the past few years. My SS tuner is an Accuphase T-100. My tube tuners are a Sherwood S-3000V and a Mac MR-67. The difference between a good tub...

Just tossing in as possibilities the old JAN GE 5751s. I had a pair of these that were very interesting, including excellent, very even sound density and truly great LF. The only tubes in my system now are the old, "New York" 6922s in my phono stage,...

Yeah, so the closeness of the grids results in a higher current gain. So what? What is the relationship between gain and sonics? Are you saying that all high gm tubes sound better than low gm tubes? And does that include 300B ...

Jim it was probably the 7788. This "supertube" was military stockpiled and difficult to get until about 8 years ago when finally military released. Then you could get them for $5 but people are getting wise now as per the $30-40 price...

All you need is knowing the exact length required to ask for the matching diameter. Probably a bike tube will do. You can cut it as a ribbon or in a string shape. This way you'd avoid any discontinuity for glueing several pieces. From one tube you co...

It is not about the LCR phono as a concept – many companies manufacture the RIAA LCR constant impedance networks: Lundahl, Tango, S&B, Da Vinci, A-D, your Allnic looks like dose them as well. The LCR filter is not complex and any manufacturing ho...

Anyhow, here is what I think I would do if I use the Alnic’s Preamp. Get rich the 7721 and 7788 and to put in there my 6E6P-DR in triode mode. The tube has very same pins and a full equivalent. Increase the plate voltag...

At the risk of overloading you... Here are a couple of quick computer drawings showing a version made from 2 inch steel tube... Material cost would be very low. jd*...

You are correct, the idea is to "hard tie" the tubes together (otherwise you don't get the rigidity... think of a paintbrush where the paint has dried in the bristles... this is what you want). You would need small welds between each tube... a 1 inch...

They mention an intricate back chamber for the high frequency unit, maybe thats the primary function of the tube, apart from positioning the unit relative to the rest....

Romy,Thank you.I think I should to give some break-in time to Sylvania 0a2.50 hours is enough? Previously I used in my EAR the next set of tubes ECC83: 1-Amperex (red print), 2-Amperex (red print), 3-Sylvania 7025 (yellow print). When I built "End of ...

hi all. I’ve been collecting some information from a few curious people here in germany. First of all: a plane wave tube measure of an maintained S2. Once with aluminum Diaphragma and once with the milky one. Blue is the milky. As you can see - t...

Whonna to drive dead woofers with single ended triode? Get the Bell Laboratories 320A tube.

AlloOn the matter of the DHT having a plate resistance of 500-700... you do realise that running the 6E5p with an unbypassed cathode resistor is giving you an effective Rp of about 12k, right? The formula is, IIRC, Rp + (mu+1)Rk.Given that 12k seems ...

I tried listening for a while this morning, figured the electricity was not good enough. When I went to switch off the amps, I immediately noticed that BOTH 5651s had failed spectacularly, with cracked bases and "white-out" on the top...
You have said that there are no "good" 6N6Ps; but are some physically constructed better than others?
Nope it was not what I said. I said the all 6N6P are equal, at least among those that I have seen and there are no rea...
